When I started this I thought about what I would call you, the person who is good at something. I thought coach but that feels to focused on sports and fitness. I thought about using the word tutor but that is all academic feeling. Teacher also did not feel right. Consultant feels to formal and focused on business. How about mentor? That’s not quite right either. Guru, councilor. Nope and nope. That is how I landed on instructor, a person that teaches something.
So, who would be a good instructor? Someone who is willing to share what they are good at with others. Someone willing to take the time to meet with someone either in person or online. Someone willing to be a guide, teacher, mentor, coach and maybe even a friend. You have to be generous and knowledgeable. Honestly, I feel that this is most anyone. We all have something that we are good at, something that within our friend/family group we are known for. An example, I’m a go to person for practicing Spanish and creating simple budgets.
Why should you chose to add Good At as a way to share?
- It is already built, and easy to use.
- Use Good At is a way to deepen your connection with others. I feel that there is an idea that people do not want to actually interact with one another. That, we just want to use an app to get what we want, no messy feeling and no possibility of rejection. But I feel it in my bones that this is not right. Do I have proof of this? Nope, I just have a feeling.
- As a testing ground for your ideas. You may think you know what your learners want but by meeting with them you can confirm that you are on the right path (validation of your ideas). From there you can then create other offerings like video tutorials or how to’s that really fit the needs of your learners.
- Small business owners: For you, I see using Good At as a way to give your customers special attention, a real connection to your business and get the word out about what you have to offer. For example, if you have a knitting store offer a listing for a beginners session. Not only do you get someone in the door that is obviously interested but you develop a relationship that will be much more valuable in the long run.
- For those who want to have a nomadic lifestyle, you can create listings to meet virtually with anyone in the world online but you could also create listings for places that you will be. If for example you happen to be going to a conference in Arizona, you can create a listings to meet with people while there.
- To make money. Since the most valuable thing that you can offer, other than your knowledge, is your time. While a video, tutorial or document that you post somewhere for sale may only make you a few cent per click or dollars per purchase but your time and one on one attention is super valuable.
Talking about money, choosing how much to charge can be difficult as we tend to under estimate our own value. Good At is set up to work best for charging hourly rates but you can also charge by instance. For example, there is an “Available Now” option, that would be best for charging a flat fee for a set amount of time. For example, having an “Available Now” listing for $30 for up to a 30 minute session. If it is done in 10 minutes, you still get paid $30. Some other things to think about when setting a price,
- In person where you will be traveling to your learner, should be a higher cost than online because of the additional time and effort it takes to get somewhere. Remember to set a distance limit or to charge more if you have to travel very far.
- If you are creating a listing for only expert level instruction it should be a higher cost than a listing for only beginners because of the additional work that preparing and helping at an expert level takes.

So, you are now convinced you are good at something, you would be a good instructor and you are willing to trade your knowledge and time for money.
How do you make Good At work for you?
That is in part your job but all so our job. We hope that the way things are set up will work but we know that we also need to get good at helping you. We are in this together. For now, here are some tips to start with:
- You don’t have to create listings but by joining Good At, if a request comes in, we will post it on the Job Board section of this blog, share it on social media and then with the Good At family (A.K.A. the e-mail mailing list). If you can fulfill the request then you can create a listing for the person making the request.
- If you do create a listing, they can be turned on and off by going to the part of the site titled “My Listings” and closing or opening the listing as needed. This would be great for the “Available Now” option. Open it when you are available and close it when you are not. What is also nice about this is that you don’t have to recreate the listing each time. Just open and close them as you need.
- Good At is not set up for offering recurring meetings (sorry, maybe in the future but not at this time). But what if you want to meet with some one once a week for a few weeks at a time? Create a listing that is to purchase a set of meetings. For example, a listing that is a set price for 4 classes to be completed with in a certain amount of time. For example, charging $200 for 4 meetings to be completed over 6 weeks time.
